Nutrient Depletion of Joint Pain Drugs

Coxibs are such a new drug that no research has been done on them yet to determine whether they rob your body of key nutrients. Other pain and inflammation medications, like aspirin and NSAIDs can rob the body of vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, folic acid, iron, potassium, and zinc. They also deplete a substance called glutathione from the body. Since glutathione has many jobs, including protecting our body from chemicals and drugs, this nutritional depletion can substantially worsen our ability to keep our body healthy. Until information becomes available, ensuring that your body receives a full compliment of vitamin and mineral nutritional support is highly recommended while taking Coxibs.

  • Iron: While selective COX-2 inhibitors were theorized to provide the advantages of NSAIDS without producing GI injury, current evidence casts doubt as to whether these drugs have any significant advantage with respect to GI safety compared to NSAIDS. Because of this, the potential for gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding exists just like with NSAIDS. A person with NSAID-induced GI bleeding may not always have symptoms (like stomach pain) or obvious signs of blood in their stool. Such bleeding can cause loss of iron from the body. Long-term blood loss due to regular use of NSAIDS can lead to iron-deficiency anemia or less advanced impairments in iron status. Monitoring iron status and initiating supplementation is recommended.
