How do Joint Pain Drugs Work: Coxibs

Coxibs (cyclooxygenase-2 specific inhibitors or COX-2 Inhibitors) are a special type of pain and inflammation medications. They are designed to block the COX-2 enzyme. Since this enzyme is involved in joint inflammation and arthritis pain, blocking it usually decreases both pain and inflammation. Since their introduction several years ago, Coxibs have been replacing older types of NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as acetaminophens) and aspirin for the treatment of pain, stiffness, and inflammation in persons with arthritis (osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis), menstrual cycle cramping, migraines, and pain and inflammation due to injury or trauma.

While Coxibs can be quite effective in reducing pain and inflammation, they are not without a risk of side effects. They also are not corrective in nature; having been designed simply to decrease a person's subjective experience of pain and inflammation. As an example, they do not supply any of the nutritional building blocks needed to repair and rebuild inflamed joints. So while one takes, Coxibs they will offer relief; however, unless other diet, lifestyle, and nutritional strategies have been implemented, pain and inflammation can return once they are stopped.
